The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has revealed a major gap in its operations, disclosing that it currently receives only half of the power it needs from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
Tunde Afolabi, the newly appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors, shared this reality while speaking with reporters during a press conference in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday.
Afolabi was open about the hurdles the company is facing, explaining that these supply shortages are the primary reason IBEDC is struggling to meet the energy needs of customers across its franchise area.
Looking toward a solution, Afolabi outlined a plan for the distribution company to bypass traditional hurdles by purchasing electricity directly from the generation companies (GenCos).
This shift is intended to breathe new life into their service delivery. The chairman noted that the incoming management is also determined to repair and restart several dormant power plants within their region to boost local capacity.
He said that “One of our biggest problems is that what we get, we are getting just 50 per cent of power demand. We can only give what we get. We are going to ensure that we are buying directly from generating companies.
“The other issue is that we have to solve the problem of redundancy. We have some power plants in this area that are not in use. We will bring them back.
“When the grid collapses, you shut down. Grid collapses. I know about 50 per cent of Gencos that are moribund now. As I said in my speech, we will give you what we get.”
