Workers from different Small Scale Enterprises (SMEs) in Nasarawa LGA of Kano State demonstrated, protesting an increase in energy tariffs, describing such a move as a threat to their jobs.
But according to them, many SMEs were to close due to the increase in electricity tariffs.
Aisha Abdullahi, who spoke on behalf of the women protesters, said: “Our source of income is under attack, and SMEs have announced plans for closure because they cannot afford the new rate.
She said, “We have nothing except this job. We have not applied for government positions anywhere. We are here to manage our meager wages in order to keep our bodies and souls alive. Unfortunately, we will be pushed out.”.
“We haven’t worked in five days, and only God knows what will happen if the SMEs decide to close altogether owing to the electrical bill hike. We are requesting that the authorities concerned review this rise.”
Alhaji Isma’ila Shehu Dakata, a SME operator in the area, said the rate increase lacked a human aspect in that it surpasses what many entrepreneurs can afford.
However, Alhaji Zilkifilu Alhassan, the Kano State Government representative in the area, assured that he would make sure of the State government’s intervention into the case and appealed with the operators not to close.
