The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed over 100 shops in Ogbete Main Market, Enugu, due to the sale of suspected fake alcoholic beverages.
This significant enforcement action was announced by the agency’s South-East Director, Martins Iluyomade, on Monday.
Iluyomade revealed that the operation, which commenced on Friday, aimed to curb the distribution of counterfeit alcoholic products. During the raid, NAFDAC confiscated a truckload of adulterated beverages and apprehended four traders suspected of selling these fake products.
“We stormed the popular Ogbete Main Market in Enugu State since Friday and have shut down 100 shops identified for selling fake alcoholic beverages,” Iluyomade stated. “Arrests were made, and the suspects are currently in custody.”
Highlighting the agency’s commitment to protecting consumers, Iluyomade emphasized the dangers posed by these counterfeit products. “This fake wine and alcoholic beverages are being sold to unsuspecting customers and the general public, but we are determined to rid the market of these unwholesome products,” he added.
The detained suspects will face legal charges upon the conclusion of NAFDAC’s ongoing investigation. This decisive action underscores NAFDAC’s dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of the public by eradicating counterfeit products from the market.
