The Federal Government has officially launched the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Effective Schools Programme in 111 selected schools across Nigeria. This initiative, announced by Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), aims to tackle the learning crisis and reduce the number of out-of-school children.
Dr. Bobboyi, represented by Deputy Executive Secretary Professor Bala Zakari (Technical), shared these developments at a meeting in Abuja with UBEC, State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs), Coordinating Directors, and Head Teachers of UBE Effective Schools. He emphasized that the programme is designed to provide Nigerian children with the tools necessary for better learning outcomes and 21st-century skills.
“The UBE Effective Schools were established to address key educational challenges and enhance the quality of basic education in Nigeria,” Dr. Bobboyi stated. “Our commitment is to create a conducive learning environment that ensures minimum educational standards are met and maintained.”
The Effective Schools Programme is structured to progressively improve teaching and learning resources, maximizing the potential of both educators and students. Initially piloted in three schools per state and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the programme spans 111 schools previously designated as UBEC E-learning centers.
Significant strides have been made, including the distribution of instructional materials, provision of tablets, installation of satellite-based learning equipment, and ICT training for head teachers and educators. The success of the programme relies heavily on the dedication of head teachers, who are pivotal in implementing the initiative and managing school curricula and administration.
Dr. Bobboyi urged head teachers to integrate the Effective Schools Programme into daily school activities, enhancing their leadership and instructional methods to ensure the programme’s success. He encouraged participants to engage fully with the programme’s interactive features and to renew their commitment to leading their schools toward excellence.
In his welcome remarks, Dr. Ossom Ossom, Director of Social Mobilisation at UBEC, highlighted the crucial role of head teachers in the success of the UBE Effective Schools Programme and reminded them of the significant responsibilities ahead.
