The Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute (OOLI) in Ogun State, in a joint effort with the University of Lagos, has just wrapped up a four-day intensive residency focused on the theme ‘Leadership for the Future,’ specifically tailored for the university’s newly elected student representatives.
In a recent update, the institute’s Media Consultant, Prof. Elvis Otobo, characterized the sessions as deeply immersive and intellectually stimulating. He noted the program was crafted to cultivate a fresh wave of principled, visionary, and high-impact leaders.
The journey began with a powerful keynote from the institute’s founder, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who set the tone for the week.
“Chief Obasanjo delivered a profound lecture on the role, objectives and values of leadership, imparting lessons that captivated and engaged the entire audience.
“He presented his renowned 55 objectives of a true leader, highlighting attributes such as achiever, actualiser, analyser, arranger, and communicator.
“The former president also listed decision-maker, encourager, enquirer, friend, and giver as essential leadership values,” he said.
Otobo mentioned that Obasanjo placed heavy emphasis on 15 vital pillars of character, ranging from integrity and honesty to a deep sense of patriotism and discipline. The former president also spoke on the necessity of tolerance, trust, and the pursuit of peace.
The consultant highlighted that the training was bolstered by a diverse group of experts from fields as varied as academia, mental health, and global finance. Their contributions moved the conversation from abstract theory to the practical, everyday tools needed to lead effectively.
The curriculum was a rich blend of interactive workshops, “emotional intelligence labs,” and deep reflections on financial and constitutional responsibility.
“These facilitators enriched the training with insights spanning governance, activism, emotional intelligence, financial stewardship, constitutional literacy, communication and global leadership trends.
“The training also witnessed the presence and support of senior officials of UNILAG, among whom were the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, Dean of Student Affairs Division, Prof. Musa Obalola.”
During the closing ceremony, Prof. Ogunsola expressed her gratitude to the former president for his “legendary and monumental” dedication to shaping the leaders of tomorrow. She also recognized the OOLI Board for their relentless drive in advancing leadership education across the country.
One particularly moving session was led by Lady Anne Welsh, a UK-based founder and CEO, who spoke on the grit required to chase one’s goals. Otobo noted that Welsh focused on the power of self-belief and how personal hardships can serve as a catalyst for greatness.
The experience culminated in a physical exploration of history, as the students toured the Presidential Library, the local zoo, and the historic Olumo Rock, grounding their new leadership insights in a profound cultural context.
