The University of Abuja’s Senate has officially signed off on the expulsion of 28 students following a string of serious disciplinary violations.
The university shared the news through a statement from Dr. Habib Yakoob, the acting Director of Information and University Relations, which was released to the press in Abuja this Sunday.
Yakoob noted that the call to expel these students came during a standard Senate meeting after they reviewed the findings and suggestions handed down by the Students’ Disciplinary Committee (SDC).
He clarified that the students involved were found responsible for a wide range of troubling behavior, including threatening lives, physical assault, cheating during exams, conspiracy, theft, and involvement in cultism or drug use.
Other reasons for the dismissals included forging ‘O’ Level results during the admission process and simply refusing to show up for disciplinary hearings despite being called multiple times.
The university’s representative further revealed that the Senate also decided to revoke the certificates of 15 graduates who ignored several official notices to meet with the committee.
On the other hand, nine students were cleared of any wrongdoing after the investigation concluded, while 33 others were given formal warnings for minor issues like fighting or hostel-related misconduct.
Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi, the Vice-Chancellor and Senate Chairman, spoke on the matter by stressing his dedication to keeping the campus a safe and productive place for everyone.
Fawehinmi made it clear that the school will stick to its guns regarding discipline, enforcing every rule and regulation without making any exceptions.
He praised the SDC for their hard work and careful attention to these cases, while reminding the student body to act with integrity and stay away from trouble that could ruin their futures.
“The academic integrity of the university is sacrosanct and we are determined that anyone who violates it, will be appropriately sanctioned.
“Our goal is not only to enforce discipline, but also to guide our students toward responsible citizenship and academic excellence,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor concluded by saying the university plans to beef up its student support, including more counseling and orientation, to encourage better behavior and stop these issues before they start.
