The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has revoked the licenses of 574 schools in Nigeria due to involvement in examination malpractices.
WAEC revealed that these schools will no longer be permitted to conduct exams, including the upcoming 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), set to start on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
Dr. Amos Dangut, the Head of WAEC’s National Office, shared this information during a press briefing at the examination body’s headquarters in Lagos on Thursday.
He confirmed that the list of these affected schools had already been forwarded to the Nigerian government.
“We’ve shared the list of 574 schools with the government, and this action will also apply to all other examination bodies,” Dangut explained.
“These schools will no longer be recognized as examination centers, and we will not be conducting exams there. They are no longer part of the WAEC examination process.”
As for the upcoming WASSCE, Dangut mentioned that over 1.97 million candidates have registered for the exams across 23,554 schools. Of this number, 979,228 are males and 994,025 are females.
The exams will run from April 24 to June 20, 2025.
