Fireboy DML Reflects on Responsibility as the Firstborn

Afrobeats star Fireboy DML has opened up about his childhood, revealing the sense of responsibility he felt as the firstborn in his family.

In an interview on the 90s Baby show, Fireboy shared that he had to attend a public school so that his younger siblings could go to private schools.

He said: “There was a time I had to go to public school so my siblings could go to private school. I heard the word ‘you have to be responsible’ for years. I think it comes naturally as a firstborn.”

Fireboy emphasized the weight of the role, explaining that, as the firstborn, he felt responsible for his siblings and maintaining the family’s reputation.

He added: “You’re responsible for your siblings and upholding the family name. I didn’t become a ‘man’ until I left home and went to university. That was when I realized I was being shielded from a lot of things.”
