Oba of Benin Honors Rema With Royal Plaque

The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has handed a royal plaque to Afrobeats superstar Rema.

The Oba handed the plaque to Rema on Thursday when the singer visited him in his palace ahead of his homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium, Benin City.

Rema had earlier in the week witnessed the groundbreaking ceremony of Edo Arena in company with the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki.

The governor also announced that a 6,000-capacity arena would be named Rema Dome after the artist.

Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, was born in Benin City, and the singer has been a strong ambassador for Edo State, showcasing the state and the culture of the ancient Benin empire through his music and live concerts.

His newest buzzing single ‘Benin Boys’ features fellow Edo-born singer Shallipopi and is an ode to the city of Benin.

In this song, Rema had it that he won an Oba medal for trying to popularize the Kingdom.
