South African music sensation Tyla has once again asserted her dominance on the global stage, clinching the Favourite Afrobeats Artist award at the 2025 American Music Awards (AMAs), held Monday night at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas.
The ‘Water’ hitmaker edged out fierce competition from Nigerian heavyweights Wizkid, Rema, Tems, and Asake to claim the coveted prize.
Tyla’s win underscores her soaring international acclaim, following a string of major recognitions since the global breakout of her chart-topping single. The award category, introduced in 2022, was first won by Wizkid, thanks to the global success of his hit, Essence.
While Tyla’s win was a standout moment for African representation, the night belonged to Billie Eilish, who emerged the biggest winner, sweeping all seven of her nominations, including Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year.
On the flip side, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande experienced surprising shutouts, leaving the ceremony without a single win despite multiple nominations.
Another headline moment came from rap icon Eminem, who won his first AMA in 15 years. He bagged Favourite Male Hip-hop Artist and Favourite Hip-hop Album, marking a major comeback on the awards stage.
