 Court sitting in Ikeja for allegedly attacking enforcement){kind=link}
The Lagos State Government has arraigned seven individuals before the Special Offences (Mobile) Court sitting in Ikeja for allegedly attacking enforcement officials of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) during an environmental monitoring operation.
The defendants—Olamilekan Abdullahi, 21; Akeem Olamilekan, 24; Frank Tom, 25; Sakiru Jamiu, 20; Emmanuel Abiodun, 41; Olarewanju Onyowale, 35; and Taiwo Yusuf, 30—were reportedly arrested by LAWMA enforcement officers on March 8, 2026.
Authorities said the suspects were apprehended in the Moshalashi Jimoh area of Lagos Island during a routine exercise aimed at tackling indiscriminate waste disposal in the community.
The defendants were brought before the court on a five-count charge, including conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, illegal dumping of refuse at an unapproved site, failure to engage the services of an authorised Private Sector Participant (PSP) waste operator, obstruction of enforcement officers while performing their duties, and assault.
Following their arraignment, the court adjourned the matter until April 24, 2026, for the commencement of trial.
The court also granted each of the defendants bail in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties required for each person. One of the sureties must be a recognised community leader, while the other must be a gainfully employed relative.
The court further ordered that the defendants be remanded in a correctional facility pending the fulfilment of their bail conditions.
Meanwhile, LAWMA reiterated that obstructing or assaulting its enforcement personnel is a serious violation of Lagos State environmental regulations.
The agency warned that anyone who interferes with environmental enforcement operations will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
