The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has reported a harrowing lone accident early Wednesday morning involving a Lexus SUV that flipped repeatedly at the NYSC Bus Stop on the LASU–Isheri Expressway, nearly claiming the lives of a mother and her young son.
Initial accounts suggest that the Lexus (KJA 39 JT) was heading toward Igando from Isheri when it suddenly lost control. The vehicle somersaulted three times, coming to a terrifying halt in the middle of the morning’s heavy peak-hour traffic on the crowded highway.
LASTMA personnel nearby acted instantly, launching a high-stakes rescue mission. They managed to pull the woman and her son from the mangled wreckage; miraculously, the pair suffered only minor bruises and mild shock, narrowly avoiding a tragic outcome.
Officers from the Igando Division of the Nigeria Police Force stood guard at the scene, managing the gathering crowd and ensuring the environment remained secure while the rescue team worked.
Relieved family members arrived shortly after the crash, taking the victims to a nearby hospital to ensure they received proper medical attention and care.
To keep the busy university corridor moving and prevent further accidents, LASTMA teamed up with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) to clear the wreckage from the road. The damaged vehicle was later turned over to the police to finalize the investigation.
Reflecting on the morning’s events, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki shared his profound relief that no lives were lost in the crash.
He offered his best wishes for the family’s recovery and reiterated the agency’s focus on fast-acting emergency services and rigorous road safety.
Bakare-Oki also took the opportunity to remind drivers of the importance of staying within speed limits and performing regular maintenance checks—especially on brakes—before hitting the road.
He cautioned that the dangerous mix of high speeds and mechanical failure continues to be a leading factor in the most severe accidents on the state’s expressways.
