The management of the Abuja National Mosque has appointed Professor Iliyasu Usman as the first Igbo Muslim Imam of the mosque.
Usman is expected to lead his maiden khutbah, sermon, today, Friday, during Jumm’at prayer in what many observers describe as a watershed for Nigerian Muslims.
The nomination has attracted wide commendations, most especially from the South East Muslim Organisation of Nigeria, otherwise known as SEMON, described it as a tribute to Usman’s commitment to Islamic knowledge and leadership.
SEMON hailed the inclusion of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, led by the President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.
SEMON said that Usman’s appointment was not only a personal milestone but a divine responsibility to lead the Muslim Ummah in devotion and service to Allah.
The organization said that it was confident that his leadership would definitely add weight to the Igbo Muslim community and bring cohesion among Muslims in Nigeria.
The statement reads, “We, the South East Muslim Organisation of Nigeria (SEMON), extend our heartfelt congratulations to Professor Ilyasu Usman on your recent appointment as an Imam of the National Mosque, Abuja.
“This prestigious role is not only a testament to your unwavering dedication and scholarly excellence but also a divine blessing and responsibility to lead the Ummah in worship and service to Allah.
“We pray that Allah (SWT) grants you the wisdom, strength, and steadfastness to discharge this sacred duty with diligence, integrity, and humility. May your leadership inspire unity, peace, and piety.”
