The management of Abuja Electricity Distribution (AEDC) has come forward to explain the widespread blackouts currently affecting Nasarawa State, pointing to a sharp drop in the power allocated to them from the national grid.
The statement, released on Wednesday, follows a wave of outages that have hit major hubs including Lafia, Keffi, and Masaka, as well as several smaller communities across the state.
According to the AEDC, the situation in these areas has become critical, with some locations struggling to operate on as little as 5 to 10 megawatts (MW).
The company noted that this tiny fraction of power is simply not enough to meet the needs of the region and is a direct result of the limited supply available from the country’s main power network.
The utility provider shed some light on why this is happening now. Nigeria’s power sector often faces its toughest hurdles during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April.
During these months, water levels in the dams drop—hampering hydropower generation—while thermal plants often deal with a lack of gas due to pipeline maintenance, vandalism, and other supply-chain hiccups.
“These factors have led to lower overall generation and reduced allocations from the national grid to all Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos), including AEDC,” the company explained.
While the current outlook is challenging, the AEDC expressed hope that the national supply will improve soon.
In the meantime, the company says it is not just waiting for the grid to recover; they are reportedly working on “longer-term solutions” designed to reduce their dependency on the national network and provide Nasarawa residents with a more resilient and reliable source of power in the future.
