The African Union (AU) has voiced serious concern over escalating military tensions between the United States and Iran.
Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, in a press statement, expressed worries over reports of US strikes carried out with Israeli forces inside Iran.
He described the situation as “a serious intensification of hostilities in the Middle East.”
The AU chairperson called for calm and urged all parties to avoid further conflict.
He appealed for “restraint, urgent de-escalation, and sustained dialogue,” emphasizing that every party must act in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter to safeguard global peace and security.
Youssouf warned that worsening tensions could increase instability worldwide.
He highlighted that further escalation might disrupt energy markets, food supplies, and economic stability, particularly in Africa, where many countries already face conflict and economic challenges.
The AU chairperson also encouraged all sides to prioritise diplomacy.
He noted ongoing international mediation efforts led by the Sultanate of Oman as a significant step toward reducing tensions.
Youssouf reiterated that lasting peace cannot be achieved through force, stressing that sustainable peace can only be secured through diplomacy, not through force.
