Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State have formally expressed their concerns to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing key party figures, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Minister of Petroleum (Gas) Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, and state party chairman Mr. Stephen Ntukekpo, of plotting to hand over party control to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor Umo Eno.
In their open letter titled “The Worrisome State of the APC in Akwa Ibom State: A Call for Your Urgent Intervention,” signed by Elder Okokon James, Hon. Peter Ibanga, and Chief Victor Affiah—representatives from Uyo, Eket, and Ikot Ekpene senatorial districts—the APC elders urged President Tinubu to act swiftly to rejuvenate the party’s presence in the state.
The letter detailed unprecedented levels of “selfishness, greed, betrayal, and treachery” within the party ranks, directly implicating Senator Akpabio in acts of betrayal against the party’s loyal base.
“What the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, is doing to the teeming and die-hard members of the All Progressives Congress in Akwa Ibom State is the height of betrayal of confidence and treachery against the party on whose platform he became the Senate President.
History and posterity will not be kind to him and all those he is using as instruments to kill the party,” the letter reads.
The elders accused both the party chairman and the minister of stating in various forums that they were instructed by Senator Akpabio to undermine the APC in the state, thereby easing the PDP’s path to victory in the upcoming 2027 elections as part of a deal for PDP’s support of Akpabio’s third-term bid.
They expressed their deep concern that these actions will leave the President without sufficient party support when he campaigns in the state next year, noting, “The soul and spirit of the party in the state have been sold to the PDP government, and as a result, party members are gearing up to join the upcoming coalition of opposition to your second-term ambition.”
The letter concludes with a stark warning: if the party membership shifts en masse to the opposition, the responsibility should fall on Senator Akpabio and Minister Ekperikpe Ekpo.
They highlighted the dire state of the APC in Akwa Ibom, which could jeopardize not only the party’s local infrastructure but also the broader national campaign efforts for the 2027 elections.
