The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Engineer Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has congratulated Mr. Tunji Disu on his appointment as Acting Inspector General of Police, urging him to place priority on protecting citizens and firmly upholding the rule of law.
In a congratulatory message delivered through his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaye, Oba Owoade characterised Disu’s professional journey as a “masterclass in dedication, unwavering patriotism, and strategic brilliance.” The monarch said Disu’s elevation reflects his steadfast commitment, professional integrity, and outstanding leadership qualities.
“Your career has been a shining beacon of courage and resilience. It is a call to service that you are exceptionally prepared for,” Oba Owoade said. “As you settle into office, I urge you to be professional and write your name in gold by giving us the new police Nigerians are craving for, so that the force can regain the trust of society.”
The Alaafin stressed that the performance of the new acting IGP would directly affect everyday Nigerians and the country as a whole.
He expressed optimism that Disu’s leadership would help close the gap between the police and the public, creating a safer, more secure, and citizen-focused environment.
Oba Owoade urged the acting IGP to uphold the highest levels of integrity, discipline, and commitment, noting expectations that his tenure would prioritise protecting the innocent and enforcing the rule of law. “The nation looks to you for a safer tomorrow,” he said, adding that Disu’s strategic direction could guide the Nigeria Police Force toward proactive policing, improved security, and renewed public confidence.
The monarch also called for the creation of human rights desks in all police stations, commands, and zonal commands across the country.
According to him, these desks should be staffed by trained personnel to handle cases of rights violations, thereby strengthening public trust and encouraging citizens to report crimes for effective law enforcement and justice delivery.
In his message, Oba Owoade also recognised the efforts of the outgoing IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, praising his years of service, professionalism, and dedication to enhancing internal security nationwide.
“The Nigeria Police Force must engender trust, safeguard the fundamental rights of all citizens, and ensure justice,” the Alaafin added, urging the new acting IGP to rise to the occasion.
