Abia State Governor Alex Otti has ordered security forces to track down and apprehend anyone connected to the reported intimidation, unlawful closure of storage facilities, or financial exploitation of merchants and transporters within the state.
He issued this command on Thursday during a meeting at his office with a delegation from the Abia State Shippers Association, headed by the Chairman of their Board of Trustees, Olo Onuma.
In response to the grievances voiced by the group, the governor voiced his alarm over the reported criminal acts targeting association members, mentioning that these specific claims had only just been brought to his attention.
“There is a government here. Any man who shows up in a warehouse and wants to break in or seal it illegally must be reported immediately,” Governor Otti stated.
“The matter must be thoroughly investigated, and all those involved must be arrested and made to face the provisions of the law,” Governor Otti said.
He restated his administration’s dedication to upholding the rule of law, cautioned that racketeering, vigilantism, or any disruptive behavior that threatens the local economy and public trust would be met with zero tolerance.
Governor Otti promised the shipping community that his leadership would always prioritize the welfare and interests of the citizens.
Regarding the plans for the Abia Inland Dry Port, the governor remarked that while the project is a key priority, it must demonstrate economic sustainability to ensure it draws in business.
Olo Onuma, representing the shippers, commended the governor for his progress in Abia but claimed that certain criminal elements are working alongside some government staff to target local craftsmen, textile merchants, and footwear manufacturers.
