Shuaibu Yushau, a man who attempted suicide by climbing Aso Radio’s high broadband mast in Katampe, Abuja, has been referred to the Social Development Secretariat for mental examination.
Yushau, a Borno condition resident who was detained by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command on Monday, would be subjected to a mental evaluation to ascertain his mental condition at the time of the occurrence.
Eyewitnesses reported that Yushau mounted the mast, generating widespread terror and alarm among residents and passers-by.
When the FCT police received the news, they immediately deployed operatives to the scene to persuade him to abandon his suicide mission.
After hours of negotiations, Yushau was eventually brought down from the mast and arrested by authorities.
Meanwhile, SP Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer, stated on Tuesday that Yushau will be prosecuted with attempted suicide, disruption of public peace, and incitement if he is deemed to be mentally stable following the evaluation.
“The suspect, if found to be mentally stable after the test, will be charged in court for attempted suicide, disturbance of public peace, and incitement contrary to sections 231, 111, and 114 of the Penal Code Act,” her statement reads.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, on his part, asked locals to follow the law while advocating for their voices to be heard, adding that the police will not be stampeded into allowing law and order to deteriorate.
