The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Yola Zone, has decried victimisation against its members in five universities.
In a statement on Saturday, the Yola Zonal Office of ASUU, which draws its membership from universities in Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe and Borno states, stated that members were being subjected to “absolute victimisation” for no justifiable reason at Federal University of Technology, Owerri; Lagos State University, Ebonyi State University, Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma; Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyimba; and Chukwu Emeka Odumegu Ojukwu University, Igbariam.
The ASUU members in universities are being subjected to violation of rights for daring to stand up for the truth. A statement signed by the Yola Zonal Coordinator, Dani Mamman, reads:.
The union wrote, “Our members are being subjected to psychological trauma and other forms of victimisation ranging from physical assault, dismissal from service, denial of promotion, stifling of union activities, suspension from duty and statutory meetings, non-payment of promotion arrears, deliberate seizure of salaries, no remittance of third party deductions, the list goes on.
It has chosen to speak out in solidarity with victimized teachers across the country, particularly those in the listed universities, as a harm to one affects all, ASUU Yola Zone explained.
“The dangerous trend has manifested alarmingly in the illegal dismissal of union members for participating in union activities during the 2021 national strike,” said the organizing group.
It wondered how a university would sack 120 lecturers if it were genuinely interested in producing well-read graduates.
ASUU said most of the academics are victimized for standing up to themselves, adding, “Our members who refuse to give in to the evil machinations of university management are made scapegoats.”
The ASUU Yola Zone hereby demands immediate reinstatement of all illegally sacked union members, just as it urged an immediate payment of withheld salary.
The union said, in a statement: “We call on the Federal Government, the National Assembly and all relevant stakeholders to intervene decisively to stop this creeping fascism.
