Saturday witnessed a bus accident in western Potosí, Bolivia, in which 37 people were killed and dozens injured, according to police and local officials.
The accident is reported to have taken place early on the Uyuni-Colchani road, when one of the buses crossed over into the other lane.
“As a result of this fatal accident, we have 39 people injured in four hospitals in the town of Uyuni, and 37 people have lost their lives,” a spokesman for the Departmental Police Command of Potosí said.
The officer further added that police officers were seeking to identify the dead and injured who had been taken to the hospital.
A crane overturned one of the buses on the site, which had tipped onto its side, as police officials took out bodies from the wreckage and transported them away on blankets.
An initial probe through a statement issued by the Bolivian Ministry of Government established that one of the buses veered into the opposing lane, allegedly due to speeding, resulting in the collision.
