China Retaliates with 84% Tariff on US Goods

China has announced a sharp increase in tariffs on imports from the United States, raising the rate from 34 percent to 84 percent, with the new policy set to take effect on April 10.

This retaliatory action follows a recent decision by US President Donald Trump to nearly double tariffs on Chinese goods, pushing duties as high as 104%.

Responding to the escalation, China’s foreign ministry criticized the US approach, urging Washington to put an end to what it described as “‘arrogant and bullying behaviour’” following the enforcement of Trump’s new tariff policy.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian condemned the continuous pressure, stating that the US has been imposing tariffs on China “‘indiscriminately’.”

In a call for more constructive dialogue, Lin emphasized that the US should take a more balanced stance, saying the country “‘should adopt an attitude of equality, respect and mutual benefit, if it really wants to solve the problem through dialogue and negotiation.’”

As both global powers dig in on trade, analysts warn the economic fallout could ripple across international markets, affecting supply chains and investor confidence worldwide.
