The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) has warned that China and India are likely to attempt interference in Canada’s upcoming general election scheduled for April 28, while also noting potential threats from Russia and Pakistan.
This announcement from CSIS comes amidst strained diplomatic relations between Ottawa, Beijing, and New Delhi, despite both China and India previously denying accusations of election interference.
Vanessa Lloyd, Deputy Director of Operations at CSIS, addressed the growing threat at a recent press briefing, highlighting the increasing role of artificial intelligence in election meddling.
“The People’s Republic of China (PRC) is highly likely to use AI-enabled tools to attempt to interfere with Canada’s democratic process in this current election,” she said.
Tensions with China escalated earlier this month after Beijing imposed tariffs on Canadian agricultural products worth over $2.6 billion, responding to Canada’s previous levies on Chinese electric vehicles, steel, and aluminum products.
Additionally, Canada recently condemned China’s execution of four Canadian citizens convicted of drug smuggling.
Responding to CSIS’s statement, a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry emphasized their long-standing non-interference policy, stating China had always adhered to the principle of not interfering in the internal affairs of other countries and had no interest in intervening in Canada’s internal matters.
Relations with India remain tense following Canada’s expulsion of six Indian diplomats last year, related to alleged involvement in activities targeting Sikh separatists in Canada.
“We have also seen that the government of India has the intent and capability to interfere in Canadian communities and democratic processes,” said Lloyd.
