A tragic accident occurred on Sunday, resulting in the death of a deaf pedestrian who was waiting for a commercial bus at a designated stop on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, near Temac Filling Station in Ikeja, Lagos.
The incident involved two Suzuki mini commercial buses (Korope), bearing registration numbers EPE 279 YJ and BDG 558 YG, as reported by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
Initial investigations indicate that one of the mini-buses was allegedly speeding recklessly, lost control, and collided with a stationary vehicle before fatally striking the pedestrian.
LASTMA officials quickly arrived at the scene to manage traffic flow, while officers from the Area F Police Division secured the vehicles involved for further investigation.
In response to a distress call, the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) transported the victim’s remains to the General Hospital, Ikeja.
Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, extended condolences to the bereaved family and sternly cautioned commercial transport operators about the consequences of excessive speeding and non-adherence to traffic laws.
Giwa underscored the necessity for regular vehicle maintenance, particularly ensuring effective braking systems, to avoid similar accidents.
He also emphasized the significance of the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) speed monitoring locations at Alapere, Ogudu Road, and Nitel on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, which monitor speed violations to improve road safety, advising motorists to strictly observe speed limits.
“Ensuring road safety is a collective responsibility. Indiscriminate speeding and disregard for traffic laws pose a severe threat to public safety,” Giwa stated. “I urge all motorists to operate within legal speed limits to prevent avoidable tragedies.”
