The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Olatunji Disu, has sent a clear message to the nation that the era of unchecked power within the Nigeria Police Force has come to an end.
Speaking with correspondents at the State House on Wednesday, shortly after his official swearing-in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Disu was visibly moved by the occasion.
He admitted that the President’s personal tribute to his long career and past successes nearly overwhelmed him.
“The way the President was mentioning a lot of activities about me, mentioning areas I have worked, mentioning successes I’ve recorded as a policeman, brought emotion to me, almost brought me to tears,” he shared, reflecting on the weight of the moment.
When asked what his first message to his officers would be as he takes command, Disu didn’t mince words. He promised a future defined by accountability and respect for the people.
“I will let them know that the era of impunity is over,” he said. “I will ensure that I train them and encourage them to ensure they follow human rights.”
Beyond reform, Disu is aiming for a culture shift. He pledged to maintain a strict “zero tolerance” policy toward corruption.
Most importantly, he signaled a desire for a new partnership with the community, stating that he plans to “drum it into” his officers that the police can only succeed if they have the trust and cooperation of the public.
