A tragic twin explosion suspected to involve grenades shook a scavenging site located on Taiwo Street, Idi-Araba, in the Mushin area of Lagos State on Thursday.
The blasts resulted in one death and left at least eight people injured.
Witnesses indicated that the initial explosion occurred around midday when a scavenger reportedly attempted to dismantle a metallic object resembling a rocket. The powerful blast instantly claimed the life of the victim.
“They probably picked up the object from somewhere else,” said Jegede Taiwo, a local resident. “The force of the blast was so intense it decapitated the man.”
A subsequent explosion occurred later that same day, around 5:00 p.m., causing severe damage to a nearby residential building and further injuries to several people.
“We saw at least eight people injured, and they were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment,” Mr. Idris reported.
Disturbing footage circulating on social media depicted objects appearing to be rocket-propelled grenades at the scene, prompting increased concern about the origin and presence of such dangerous materials among local scavengers.
Police and firefighting units quickly responded, working to restore calm and ensure safety in the community.
