Authorities of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, have confirmed the arrest of about 823 drivers within the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja for allegedly beating traffic light.
FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide said, in a statement on Friday that the corps also handed 923 penalties seized 189 vehicles and impounded 634 licenses and vehicle particulars for traffic signal violation, zebra crossing among other traffic infringements in the nation’s capital.
According to the statement, the arrests were carried out in special enforcement operations beginning on September 2, 2024.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, in September 2024, commissioned a Special Enforcement Patrol, code-named ‘Operation Karara’, against violators of traffic signals and Zebra crossing in Abuja.
The FRSC said the “operation, which targets the reduction of the high incidence of traffic light violations, which singularly contribute to road crashes and gridlocks in the nation’s capital; is expected to actualize its mandate through speedy arrest and prosecution of traffic light violators, conduct public enlightenment and education on traffic rules and regulations, as well as collaboration with other security agencies to enhance traffic management.”
It added that the Corps Marshal who approved the operation stated with sufficient emphasis that violations of traffic lights are a huge contributor to road crashes and must be brought to a halt by whatever operational means necessary within the ambit of the law.
