The Kano State House of Assembly has called on the state government to act quickly in the face of moves by the United States to sanction the leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, over claims of anti-Christian sentiment.
The urgency follows reports that U.S. lawmakers have labeled Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as anti-Christian—even going as far as to level allegations of terrorism financing—and are proposing to freeze his global assets and bank accounts.
This defensive resolution was sparked by a motion brought forward during Tuesday’s session by Usman Tasiu, representing Kiru Constituency, and was formally presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Ismail Falgore.
During the presentation, Senator Kwankwaso was painted not as the figure described in the U.S. reports, but as a devoted public servant whose years in office have fundamentally bettered the lives of millions in Kano.
Tasiu went on to defend Kwankwaso’s legacy, pointing to his long-standing commitment to peace and his efforts to provide education and modern infrastructure for both the Christian and Muslim communities alike.
He further argued that Kwankwaso has always served as a bridge-builder, stepping in to resolve tensions between northern and southern Nigeria while maintaining a zero-tolerance policy toward terrorism during his time in power.
Following a period of debate, the House stood in a show of unity to adopt the motion, officially pressing the Kano State Government to take the necessary diplomatic steps to challenge the American allegations.
In addition to this political defense, the Assembly also turned its attention to local needs, clearing motions that urge the state government to begin road construction projects across several communities.
These infrastructure requests, covering areas like Tarauni, Madobi, and Garun Malam, were championed by Kabiru Dahiru, Sulaiman Ishaq, Deputy Speaker Muhammad Bello, and Zakariyya Alhassan.
