Tension has prevailed in Utuno village in Nagaski Local Government Area of Kebbi State following reports that suspected bandits have demanded N100 million from Islamic preachers as a condition to continue their religious activities in the community.
The demand was allegedly communicated through a letter addressed to community leaders, in which they warned that non-compliance would have consequences.
This development follows the recent attack allegedly carried out by Lakurawa bandits in parts of Arewa South in Kangiwa Local Government Area which left at least 33 people dead.
A resident of the area, speaking to reporters on condition of anonymity, said the letter has upset the entire community.
“People are deeply concerned. The tone of the message shows that they are determined and the community is concerned about what could happen,” the source said.
According to the resident, the attackers claimed in the letter that they were not afraid of anyone, including security personnel, and urged the community not to ignore their warning.
Reacting to the development, the Kebbi State government confirmed awareness of the threat and assured residents that preventive measures were already in place.
Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Nasir Idris, said the governor has ordered the immediate deployment of security personnel to Utuno and neighboring communities.
He said Governor Idris has directed the police chief to deploy more officers to the area to prevent any attack.
