Leaders of organised labour, including the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have confirmed their support for the Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government’s N70,000 minimum wage.
Following a crucial meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of the NLC, confirmed the unions’ decision to accept the offer.
Flanked by Comrade Festus Usifo, President of the TUC, and other Nigerian workers, Ajaero stated that the unions accepted the offer because of the additional incentives.
He stated that the President’s vow to review the minimum wage every three years, which differed from prior procedures, played a key role in their choice.
The union leaders had initially wanted a minimum pay of at least N250,000. However, the agreed-upon figure, combined with the promise of periodic evaluations, convinced the unions to accept the N70,000 offer.
