The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as KAI, has shut down Idera Market in the state’s Oshodi area over violation of environmental laws.
This was in a statement by Corps Marshal Major Olaniyi Cole, rtd, on Thursday.
He said it was part of fresh efforts to ensure environmental tidiness within the state-sanctioned markets.
According to Cole, “Our operatives stationed across the Oshodi division during routine market monitoring identified the filth, unsanitary practices, and indiscriminate dumping of refuse around the Idera Market area, which made us to close the market until further notice.”
He slammed the poor hygiene in the market, said to be capable of triggering sickness and disease epidemics among both the market merchants and shoppers alike.
“Markets must imbibe hygienic practices to prevent the spread of diseases,” Oke pointed out.
He also said that the market leadership was not able to produce a valid waste collection contract, citing the infraction as the major cause of refuse heaps in the market.
The KAI boss also called on other markets across the state to sustain a good level of hygiene, as KAI operatives would continue to regularly patrol market environment for infractions.
He warned that any such market found to be in error would be closed until complete compliance was met.
