More than twenty healthcare workers at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) who were exposed to a confirmed Lassa fever patient have all tested negative for the virus.
This was revealed by Professor Muhammad Abba Suwaid, Chairman of the hospital’s Medical Advisory Committee. He explained that the staff members were immediately isolated and had their blood samples taken for analysis, with all results confirming no infection.
Professor Suwaid attributed this outcome to the professionalism and strict adherence to medical protocols by AKTH staff, noting that their actions played a key role in preventing any internal outbreak.
The situation arose after a 22-year-old pregnant woman, confirmed to have Lassa fever, was admitted to the hospital on April 5, 2025. In response, the hospital management took prompt action by activating infection control protocols aimed at containing the disease.
Beyond testing the medical personnel, individuals identified through contact tracing were also screened. Among them, only the patient’s husband tested positive. He is currently being monitored and treated by the Kano State Epidemiology Unit.
Following the diagnosis, AKTH promptly informed the Kano State health authorities, who have begun contact tracing efforts in Garun Malam Local Government Area, where the patient resides.
Hospital officials have assured the public that the situation is fully under control, with ongoing measures in place to curb any potential spread.
