Tragedy struck in the Oke Aro area of Akure, Ondo State capital, on Friday as a fatal road accident claimed one life and left several others injured.
The crash, which involved a commercial tricycle, known locally as Keke Marwa, and a truck, was reportedly the result of reckless driving by both drivers.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the victims were passengers in the tricycle, including a couple whose identities had yet to be confirmed as of the time of reporting.
The husband tragically lost his life on the spot, while the wife sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital.
“The driver of the truck, in a bid to escape being mobbed, fled immediately after the crash but shortly after, reported himself at the ‘B’ Division Police Station in Oke Aro,” an eyewitness said.
The incident sparked outrage among local youths, who staged a mini-protest and attempted to storm the police station where the truck driver was being held. However, swift intervention by officers at the scene brought the situation under control.
Speaking on the incident, Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed that one person had died and others were being treated.
“I can confirm to you that a man died in the accident while his wife is still receiving treatment at the hospital,” Ayanlade stated.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Akure.
