Mark Carney, the just-elected Canadian prime minister, is to be sworn in along with his cabinet this Friday morning.
The former central banker vowed smooth and speedy transfer when he replaced Justin Trudeau, who resigned last January after nearly a decade at the helm.
On Sunday, 59-year-old political newbie Carney swept into office as the new Liberal Party leader with 86% of more than 150,000 votes.
His inaugural foray into politics, after having headed the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada previously, comes amid increased tensions with America in terms of trade.
In his victory speech to the masses, Carney was aggressive in tone toward Washington, asserting, “In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win.”
Carney signaled on Wednesday that he was willing to meet with US President Donald Trump and sign a new trade agreement in a bid not to fan economic tensions.
Previously, a 25% tariff on steel and aluminium imports into the United States took effect.
Canada acted swiftly by introducing retaliatory tariffs.
