The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has closed four unlicensed bakeries in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Chukwuma Oligbu, NAFDAC’s South-South Zonal Director, claimed that the bakeries were operating illegally and in unsanitary conditions.
NAFDAC identified the affected bakeries as He Reigns Bakery, Rumuigbo; Divine Freedom Bread, Rumuomasi; De Heroes Bakery, Psychiatric Road, Rumuigbo; and The Lord’s Abundant Bakery, Rumuigbo.
According to the regulating agency, the proprietors of the bakeries have been instructed to report to the zonal office for interrogation while investigations continue, and samples of the created bread have been collected for laboratory analysis.
Oligbu stated, “The bakeries were operating without registration licenses and with very bad Good Hygienic Practice (GHP).
“Pans with dough were kept on the floor, the makeshift buildings had uncovered windows, bakery workers were not well kitted with PPEs, lister generator sets were sited inside the production rooms, there was no factory flow, etc.,” the managing director said.
Oligbu warned that violators of NAFDAC laws face prosecution and even jail time if convicted.
He urged makers of NAFDAC-regulated items to seek advice and supervision from the agency’s office while setting up their facilities and enterprises.
The zonal director emphasized that the agency will make illicit producers in Rivers State and in the South-South Zone uncomfortable if they do not follow NAFDAC standards.
