The Nigerian Navy has successfully uncovered and dismantled three illicit refining sites in Oteghele, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, dealing a major blow to oil theft operations in the region.
The operation, carried out on March 24 by officers from the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Escravos, was based on credible intelligence and led to significant seizures.
During a briefing with journalists on Thursday in Warri, Navy Captain Ikenna Okoloagu, Commanding Officer of FOB Escravos, confirmed that the mission yielded valuable results.
“The operation led to the seizure of about 2,700 litres of stolen crude oil and 2,200 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil, AGO. These were stored in two ovens, 10 dug-out pits, two drums, and 26 polythene sacks.”
Captain Okoloagu emphasized the Navy’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime environment and combating economic sabotage. He stated that their efforts align with the strategic vision of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla.
“This operation is part of ongoing efforts to curb oil theft and boost the country’s crude oil production. We will continue to carry out these operations relentlessly to protect Nigeria’s economic interests,” he stated.
This latest crackdown under Operation Delta Sanity II highlights the Navy’s renewed resolve to tackle the persistent problem of illegal oil refining in the Niger Delta — a region long affected by crude oil theft and environmental destruction.
As security operations intensify, the Nigerian Navy’s action serves as a clear warning to oil vandals and reinforces efforts to stabilize the nation’s oil sector and economy.
