NGO Urges Anambra Government to Rehabilitate Juvenile Offenders

The Anti-Kidnapping, Human Trafficking, Child Abuse, and Drug Abuse Initiative (AKH-TRACADA), an NGO, has appealed to the Anambra State Government to urgently rehabilitate juvenile offenders.

The call was made by Mr. Belonwu Ezeanyaeche, Executive Director of the NGO, in a statement issued in Abuja Wednesday.

He responded to a widely trending video on which nine children were in detention for offences such as burglary, stealing, drug abuse, and robbery.

Ezeanyaeche attributed the increase in youth crime to factors such as broken homes, parental lack of guidance, peer influence, and drug abuse.

He added that if not checked, such children would find themselves becoming streetwise criminals or militant/terrorist group members who recruit others.

To stem the trend, he proposed a multi-strategy comprising rehabilitation programs and occupational skill training.
