Mabel Segun, a distinguished Nigerian novelist and writer, has died at 95.
The tennis champion, broadcaster, and diplomat died, her family reported in a statement last Thursday.
The retired public administrator died during the early morning hours of Thursday, the release stated.
Her funeral arrangements would be announced by the family at a later time, the release added.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well spent in the pursuit of excellence in Literature, Broadcasting and Sports that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Mabel Dorothy Okanima Segun (nee Aig-Imoukhuede),” the statement read.
The novelist had an impressive legacy of outstanding accomplishments and contributions to Nigeria.
Segun, born on February 18, 1930, was an actual pioneer who broke glass ceilings throughout her storied life.
Segun went to university in Nigeria and received a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature, Latin, and History from University College Ibadan (currently the University of Ibadan) in 1953.
This achievement was just the start of a brilliant academic and working life that would find her globe-trotting across the country and beyond.
