The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Jigawa State has apprehended a 38-year-old man, Basiru Yushe’u, over his alleged involvement in tampering with iron wires from a bridge located in Bakin Gada, Auyo Local Government Area.
This was made known in a statement released on Wednesday in Dutse, the state capital, by the NSCDC’s Public Relations Officer for the Jigawa Command, Badruddeen Tijjani. The statement read, “The arrest was made on Friday, July 18, 2025, following a distress call received by NSCDC operatives.”
As detailed in the release, the suspect was caught just as he was attempting to sell off the stolen iron materials, prompting a swift intervention from NSCDC personnel.
“This shows the effectiveness of the Corps’ surveillance and response mechanism,” the statement added.
During questioning, the suspect reportedly admitted to committing the offence. He told investigators that he was fishing when he spotted the cable, cut it with a metal hand saw, and hid it before later transporting it to sell as scrap.
“The suspect is currently in custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation,” Tijjani said.
The NSCDC emphasized that such actions pose significant risks to public safety and threaten the progress of infrastructure projects.
In response, the command issued a firm caution to anyone involved in such destructive behavior to stop immediately or prepare to face legal consequences.
The statement also quoted NSCDC Jigawa Commandant Bala Bodinga, who praised the personnel involved in the arrest and reaffirmed the Corps’ resolve to protect key infrastructure and assets across the state.
He also appealed to community members to stay alert and report any unusual or suspicious activities in their surroundings.
According to him, such proactive support from the public would aid the Corps in curbing acts of vandalism and other criminal offenses.
In closing, the NSCDC reiterated its unwavering stance against vandalism, stressing that “vandalism is a serious crime that can have far-reaching consequences for the economy and public safety.”
Residents were again encouraged to remain cooperative and share useful information with the Corps in order to safeguard lives and property within Jigawa State.
