Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has visited the victims of the recent Onitsha market fire incident.
Recall that two separate fires recently engulfed sections of Onitsha markets—specifically, the electronics market along Iweka Road and warehouses located on Ifejirika Street within the Main Market.
During his visit, Obi extended his sympathies to warehouse owners and traders affected by the devastating incident.
He described the situation as heartbreaking, lamenting the severe losses incurred by traders, noting that goods valued at several billions of naira were destroyed in the inferno.
Obi expressed particular concern about the disaster’s severe impact on the livelihoods of traders, many of whom depended solely on their businesses for survival.
He appealed for support, stating: “I am calling on well to do Nigerian, those who can should come to the aid of these people. In moments like this, our shared humanity must prevail.
“Let us come together to restore hope, rebuild livelihoods, and reaffirm the spirit of community that defines us.”
An affected trader, Mr. Jeremiah Nwabueze, who accompanied Obi during the visit, expressed profound gratitude for his presence, describing it as deeply consoling. Nwabueze remarked that Obi’s visit brought comfort and solidarity at a time of immense personal and communal loss.
