The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has called on the newly appointed management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) to activate the “Petroleum Products Passport” system to enhance security and accountability in petroleum distribution.
Dr. Billy Gillis-Harry, National President of PETROAN, made the appeal on Sunday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, while addressing recent developments in the oil and gas sector.
The Petroleum Products Passport is a digital document containing vital information on the origin, quality, and specifications of petroleum products being transported or traded.
According to PETROAN, the nationwide activation of this platform would ensure that every product lifted by petroleum tankers is tracked, utilized, and accounted for.
“We are looking forward to ensuring that the petroleum products passport platform is activated for national use to ensure the safety of tankers,” said Gillis-Harry.
“The key benefits of this technology include protection of petroleum tankers and products being lifted from the depot to fuel stations. It ensures that products are secured, safe, and received at their destinations without being hijacked or smuggled,” he added.
Gillis-Harry also urged the new NNPC Ltd. leadership to adopt innovative strategies, including increasing domestic crude oil production by one million barrels per day to ensure adequate feedstock for local refineries.
On the need for transparency, he stressed that as a publicly-owned company, NNPC Ltd. must maintain open communication with Nigerians to foster trust and accountability.
“The industry already has what is called the Petroleum Industry Stakeholders’ Forum; that forum has the role to shape the industry, and should be sustained.
“All the refineries under the NNPC Ltd. should be looked into quickly for efficient repair to boost oil production.
“There should be a consultation forum with retail outlet owners to ensure that prices are not arbitrarily fixed,” he said.
Gillis-Harry congratulated the new leadership of NNPC Ltd., describing the newly appointed Group Chief Executive Officer, Bayo Ojulari, and non-executive Chairman, Ahmadu Kida, as seasoned professionals well-suited for their roles.
President Bola Tinubu had on April 2 announced the appointments as part of efforts to reposition the national oil company.
The Tinubu administration aims to raise crude oil production to two million barrels per day by 2027 and three million by 2030. Additionally, gas output is targeted to reach eight billion cubic feet daily by 2027 and 10 billion cubic feet by 2030.
The government also expects NNPC Ltd.’s share of refined crude oil to hit 200,000 barrels per day by 2027 and expand to 500,000 barrels daily by 2030.
