President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the withdrawal of police officers currently assigned to protect Very Important Persons (VIPs) across the country.
A statement from his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, said that moving forward, police personnel will focus on their core policing responsibilities.
The directive followed a security meeting held by President Tinubu on Sunday in Abuja, attended by police, Air Force, and Army chiefs, as well as the Director-General of the Department of State Services.
According to the directive, VIPs needing police protection will now request well-armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Many regions of Nigeria, especially remote areas, have limited police presence, making it challenging to protect and serve the public effectively.
The statement emphasized that in light of the current security challenges, President Tinubu aims to strengthen police presence in all communities.
Already, he has approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers, with federal and state governments working together to upgrade police training facilities nationwide.
The Sunday meeting included Chief of Army Staff Lt General Waidi Shaibu, Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and Director-General of the Department of State Services Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
