Reps Summons Nigerian Railway Corporation MD Over Asset Management

The House of Representatives Committee on Land Transport has summoned the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Kayode Opeifa, along with the Managing Director of Railway Property Management Company Limited, Timothy Zalanga, over issues concerning the operation of NRC and the management of its assets nationwide.

This invitation came following a resolution passed during the committee’s recent meeting.

Hon. Blessing Onuh, Chairman of the House Committee on Land Transport, clarified that the call for Opeifa and Zalanga is not intended as a witch-hunt but rather to ensure that these government agencies meet their responsibilities effectively.

During the session, some committee members raised concerns about how NRC assets are managed and allegations of indiscriminate property sales carried out without proper procedures.

There were also worries voiced over NRC pensioners and staff reportedly being evicted from their apartments in the staff quarters while these properties are sold off.

Onuh referenced sections 88, 89, 128, and 129 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), highlighting the legislature’s clear oversight powers. She emphasized that the committee under her leadership “will not watch and allow things to go in the wrong direction.”

The committee has directed the NRC and Railway Property Management Company Ltd to submit relevant documents related to the 2022, 2023, and 2024 budget performances, the NRC’s assets, and Public-Private Partnership arrangements to the committee secretariat by Tuesday, 20th May 2025.

Meanwhile, both managing directors are expected to appear before the committee on Wednesday, 21st May 2025.

Onuh added that the committee intends to foster collaboration with relevant stakeholders to drive success in the land transport sector, with particular focus on the railway system.
