The team from SEMA has evacuated 3,683 persons that were stranded in their homes due to heavy floods around Maiduguri, Borno State.
The Director-General of SEMA, Barkindo Mohammed, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Maiduguri on Friday.
As of 5 pm on Thursday, SEMA had rescued 3,683 people from their homes in an ongoing rescue operation. The search and rescue continue.
It means rescue by motor boats, canoes, divers, military and fire department trucks, and other means.
“As the water continues receding we’re concentrating on the distressed calls and are going to start search and rescue today and tomorrow,” Mohammed said.
He informed that over two million persons were affected, and the SEMA has constructed 14 official camps and hundreds of unofficial ones for the displaced people.
He said that so far, the Federal Government had provided the state with N3 billion and food consignments.
“President Bola Tinubu gave each of Borno and other states N3 billion.
Meanwhile, Governor Babagana Zulum of Zulum State has released the funds into the coffers of SEMA and augmented what was provided by the Federal Government.
“We are not only responding to the flood victims in Maiduguri but also in Local Government Areas across the state,” Mohammed told the gathering.
