At least one person has been confirmed dead after a small plane carrying six individuals crashed on Saturday afternoon roughly 50 miles (80 km) south of Albany, the capital of New York State.
According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, the Mitsubishi MU-2B aircraft went down in a muddy field around 12:15 p.m. (1615 GMT) in Copake, New York, near the Massachusetts state line. The plane was reportedly en route to Columbia County Airport near Hudson, New York.
As of the time of this report, authorities have not confirmed whether there were additional injuries or fatalities among the passengers.
Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the local sheriff’s office have indicated that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will provide more detailed updates on Sunday.
Speaking at a press conference, Columbia’s Undersheriff Jacqueline Salvatore said emergency response teams were facing challenges due to weather and ground conditions.
“It’s in the middle of a field and it’s pretty muddy, so accessibility is difficult,” she stated.
The exact cause of the crash remains unknown at this time, and investigations are currently ongoing.
