Some street beggars in Kano have urged the organizers of the recent nationwide protests to put down their swords in the name of compassion.
Baba Haliru, a 70-year-old beggar from Rigiyar Zaki, told NAN that the protests have made survival increasingly difficult.
Haliru added that many beggars relied on their daily earnings to support their families, but the protests have prohibited them from doing so.
He said, “We have not eaten anything in our household of 14 for two days in the last four days except water.
“For God’s sake, please reach out to those who organised the protests to end them by negotiating with the government.”
Other beggars mirrored Haliru’s thoughts, demanding an end to the protests and a complete relaxation of the curfew.
Malama Mario Kabiru of Hotoro quarters stated, “We have ran out of food and cannot go out to acquire more. We have no money, and the situation is intolerable.”
Malam Isa Musa of Dorayi quarters also urged the government to implement measures to meet the needs of old people who are without support.
“We’re begging because we don’t have anyone to support us. Since the curfew was implemented, we have not eaten anything with our families in the last three days.
“We can’t continue like this; kindly let the protests stop,” he said.
