The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that work is currently underway to erect three new towers along the 330 Kilovolt (kV) Kainji-Birnin Kebbi transmission line, which collapsed on May 7.
According to a statement released on Saturday in Abuja by the General Manager of Public Affairs, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, the collapse occurred at approximately 5:35 p.m. due to heavy winds.
Mrs. Mbah explained that TCN has mobilised three different contractors to the site, each responsible for reconstructing one of the fallen towers. This strategic approach aims to expedite the restoration process and reduce the downtime of the affected line.
“In the meantime, efforts have been made to cushion the impact of the disruption in bulk power supply to Kaduna DisCo, which affects some of its customers,” she said.
She noted that Sokoto and Birnin Kebbi are currently receiving between six to seven Megawatts (MW) of bulk electricity from the Mando Transmission Substation. This is being delivered via the 132kV Mando-Zaria-Funtua-Gusau-Talata Mafara-Sokoto-Birnin Kebbi line.
Mrs. Mbah expressed appreciation for the patience and understanding of the affected communities, assuring that contractors, alongside TCN’s supervising engineers, are working diligently to rebuild the towers and restring the 330kV transmission line.
She concluded by apologising for any inconvenience caused by the collapse and reaffirmed TCN’s commitment to fully restoring power supply as quickly as possible.
