President Bola Tinubu has formally decorated Tunji Disu with his new rank as the acting Inspector-General of Police during a ceremony at the State House in Abuja.
The event was attended by a high-level delegation, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
Also in attendance was the outgoing IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, marking a formal transition of leadership.
The timing of Disu’s appointment is particularly noteworthy. He was just 48 days away from his scheduled retirement on April 13, 2026—the date he hits the mandatory age of 60.
However, thanks to the amended Police Act, his career path has taken a significant turn.
The new laws allow an Inspector-General to serve a full four-year term regardless of their age, meaning Disu could now remain at the helm until 2030.
During the ceremony, President Tinubu pinned the new insignia onto Disu’s uniform and took a moment to commend Egbetokun for his dedicated service to Nigeria.
This change in leadership comes rapidly, just one day after Egbetokun handed in his resignation on Tuesday.
In his letter to the President, the former IGP explained that he needed to step down to focus on pressing family matters that require his full attention.
