President Bola Tinubu on Sunday inaugurated the 125km Benin-Asaba Road, which would be completed in 30 months.
Tinubu was represented at the inauguration by the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo.
Okpebholo said the road is a legacy project and that Edo State is now assuming the shape of Lagos in the area of infrastructural development.
He thanked the President for the love shown to Edo State during his years as governor.
He said, “The President loves Edo State so much so that whenever he sees me, he always asks me about the welfare of the Edo people and also that of the Oba of Benin.
“The good things happening in Lagos are now also happening here in Edo State and we have made progress under my watch as governor.”
“We once had a president from this region that never remembered us. Edo is a gateway to the nation and when the roads are bad, the economy of the state will be bad as well.”
Okpebholo thanked the president for his vision for the nation, saying the people are enjoying the dividends of democracy following the good initiatives his administration has embarked on.
Works Minister, Dave Umahi, commended Okpebholo’s leadership vision to whom he boasted has turned the state into a work site within less than 150 days in government.
The minister also commended the love of the people of Edo State by Tinubu by pointing out that he as a minister had visited the state about three times for work purposes.
He also commended Okpebholo who he said has been demonstrating love and commitment to his people by embarking on people-oriented projects like the flyover at Ramat Park in Benin City, the state capital.
The Minister of Finance and Minister of Coordination of the Economy, Wale Edun, thanked the president for being visionary enough to ensure the citizens of Nigeria have good roads across the nation, and the citizens can be assured that the money for the project is available; hence, the projects from the very beginning till the end are a certainty.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori also expressed gratitude to the president for doing what he is doing for Deltans and Edo people, urging him to extend the road to Onitsha Bridge.
Oborevwori, through his deputy Monday Onyeme, described the road as a critical infrastructure that connects the Eastern and Western regions of Nigeria.
He stated that the highway will improve the lifestyle of the people and urged all to come together in ensuring the successful completion.
