President Bola Tinubu has announced his government’s plan to conduct a new national population and housing census with biometric and digital components.
To this end, the President is making plans to set up a Presidential Committee to facilitate the exercise.
The last census was held in November 2006.
President Tinubu made the disclosure while meeting with officials of the National Population Commission, or NPC.
He said he will establish a committee to reconcile the census budget to the prevailing budgetary reality of the government, adding that the National Identity Management Commission, or NIMC, must be included in the exercise.
“We must ascertain who we are, how many we are, and how to manage our data. Without an accurate census, we can’t successfully plan for employment, agriculture, and food sovereignty. So many problems come up without accurate data”, President Tinubu stated.
